Why?

by Luke

What fictional character would you bring to life and why?

Your question has been flying around in my head for weeks. Superman, Wonder Woman, Mr. Incredible, The Flash, I’ve considered the merits of every superhero I could think of and still came up short. Selfishly, I imagined meeting Yoda and learning to use the force. Or spending a day with Harry Potter playing quidditch and eating chocolate frogs. What kept me searching was the second half of your question, “and why?”

Why, why, why? Thinking about why left me no choice but to summon the greatest fictional character ever imagined: Shrek. Yep, a big, green, stinky ogre is who I want to meet and here are my reasons why:

He’s truly honest. Shrek keeps it real. He knows and accepts who he is and isn’t afraid to be different.

He’s antisocial. You wouldn’t catch Shrek on twitter or snapchat. He can’t be bothered cultivating superficial relationships, he’s too busy living his best swamp life.

He’s green. To my knowledge we don’t have green people on earth. Maybe Shrek’s greenness would help small-minded people stop thinking so much about skin pigment and start thinking more about who’s in the skin.

He rises to the challenge. He didn’t go out looking to be a hero, but when he was called to stand and deliver, he did. That kind of courage and dependability is something I aspire to have one day. Maybe today?

He gets the girl ogre. This is one of my favorite reasons why I want to meet Shrek. Princess Fiona is his soul partner, no matter what she looks like. Bonus, she turned out to be an ogre. Speaking of looks …

He’s not typical looking. People stare and even run away from him. While this made him more protective, it also helped him dig in and love himself. This is something I’m trying to do and also help my sister do too. Her atypical looks have gotten a lot of stares through the years and together we’ve learned the best thing to do is stare back adding a beautiful smile.

He changes his mind. Shrek doesn’t compromise who he is, but he does find the courage to face his vulnerability and make changes. If everyone learned to do this, the world would be a better place.

In choosing Shrek, I missed out on hanging with Bart Simpson or ruling alongside Aslan in Narnia, but I learned more about the power of “why.” When you really stop to think of the reasons why you make certain choices, you get the opportunity to know yourself better and, more importantly, to do better. Just ask Shrek.
